TWO THEATRES, ONE VISION RESIDENCY AND SOLO EXHIBITION
Artist in Residence, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Theatres, September 2023-February 2024
End of Residency Solo Exhibition, Liverpool Everyman Theatre, 13-23 March 2024
I was delighted to be selected to undertake this 6-month, part-time residency with Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Theatres. During the residency I researched and developed a body of work exploring the contrasting internal and external architecture and public spaces of both the Everyman and Playhouse theatres, combined with my unique experiences of being in those spaces. I identified architectural details/spaces/views of both the publicly accessible areas within the buildings and the distinctive external theatre buildings, then combined them with the colours I experience through my sound-colour synaesthesia whilst working in those spaces. I created a series of paintings that are colourful, semi-abstracted, yet recognisable images of the interiors and exteriors of the Everyman and Playhouse.
This residency has been a standalone project from my work expressing music. It has further developed my artistic practice involving the use of sound and experiences of being in spaces, whilst producing work highlighting the unique environment and architecture of the Everyman and Playhouse.
In conjunction with dot-art, who recently interviewed me about the residency project for their blog: https://dot-art.co.uk/2024/03/07/ali-barker-artist-in-residence-at-the-everyman-playhouse-theatres/
